Nineteen Miles of West Plains Streets Treated with Microsurfacing, Chip and Seal

That quick trip across town just got a little smoother thanks to some recently-completed road work around the City of West Plains.

Beginning in mid-August, crews from Donelson Construction out of Clever, Mo. and Missouri Petroleum out of St. Louis, Mo. successfully microsurfaced and chip and sealed over 19 miles of roads in West Plains, according to Street Supervisor Brian Mitchell. In total, 53 streets were microsurfaced, and three streets were chip and sealed.

All sealing work scheduled for 2018 has been completed, said Mitchell, leaving much of West Plains with a new look to their roadways that extends the life of the existing pavement. “We appreciate everyone’s patience during this process,” said Mitchell. “The companies tried to give advance warning to any residents or businesses that would be affected by the work, but we apologize for those that did not receive a notice or were inconvenienced.”

Microsurfacing is a type of sealcoat applied in order to preserve and protect the underlying pavement structure and provide a new, safe driving surface. “In this process, there is an oil and rock mixture that leaves somewhat of a rough surface to increase the skid resistance and to seal the old pavement,” explained Mitchell. This process adds 6-8 years of life to the asphalt pavement and is typically applied on an intermittent basis, he said.

Chip and seal is a process where road oil is applied to the asphalt and then specialized equipment applies one-quarter inch rock chips, said Mitchell. Chip and seal is done to keep water from penetrating paved surfaces, to fill and seal cracks of old pavement, to provide a skid-resistant surface, and to minimize the effects of aging.

Mitchell said microsurfacing and chip and seal are approximately one-third the cost of an asphalt overlay, although some streets will be given an asphalt overlay in the near future depending on their condition, said Mitchell.
